Summary

Black Beauty is a perennial children's favourite, one which has never been out of print since its publication in 1877。 It is a moralistic tale of the life of the horse related in the form of an autobiography, describing the world through the eyes of the creature。 In taking this anthropomorphic approach, the author Anna Sewell broke new literary ground and her effective storytelling ability makes it very easy for the reader to accept the premise that a horse is recounting the exploits in the narrative。

The gentle thoroughbred, Black Beauty, is raised with care and is treated well until a vicious groom injures him。 The damaged horse is then sold to various masters at whose hands he experiences cruelty and neglect。 After many unpleasant episodes, including one where he becomes a painfully overworked cab horse in London, Black Beauty finally canters towards a happy ending。 Although Anna Sewell's classic is set firmly in the Victorian period, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness。

There have been many film and television adaptations of the story, but it is only the novel that captures the authentic voice of the central character。

I enjoyed this book as it is about my favorite animal, it uses the literary device anthropomorphism。

。。。more

A charming tale which raises awareness of animal cruelty。My only real knowledge of Black Beauty came from snippets of the Thames TV show of the mid-70s which made it seem like Black Beauty had various weekly adventures (essentially a horse version of the Littlest Hobo)。 But actually, the book is a life story, one narrated by none other than the horse (very original for 1877) and has short pithy chapters which presumably explains why it became so popular with children。 It's essentially the tale o A charming tale which raises awareness of animal cruelty。My only real knowledge of Black Beauty came from snippets of the Thames TV show of the mid-70s which made it seem like Black Beauty had various weekly adventures (essentially a horse version of the Littlest Hobo)。 But actually, the book is a life story, one narrated by none other than the horse (very original for 1877) and has short pithy chapters which presumably explains why it became so popular with children。 It's essentially the tale of all the people that own Black Beauty through his life and the various jobs he has as a working horse。 Most of the book is rather tame and there's some obvious moralising about the ill-treatment of horses during the Victorian era。 Apparently, the descriptions of cruelty caused by 'bearing rein' (keeping the horses head up) enraged readers so much that it was quickly made illegal as a result of the book。 I enjoyed the chapters where Black Beauty becomes a London cab horse and dashes around the various streets from station to station or picks up drunken revelers at 1am。 And obviously the cruelty is not nice to read but it's generally kept to a minimum without ever getting too dark。 But more than once Sewell has a bad human character get his comeuppance for such behavior。 Oh, and there seems to be a great deal of criticism regarding the over consumption of alcohol。 And one thing I didn't like was how each new owner gave Black Beauty a new name; perfectly understandable why they would but it occasionally meant hearing a name (Jack for example) and thinking。。。 who the hell is Jack? before realising it's his newest name。 But the book has a happy ending。 And Black Beauty even ends the book with his original name。 The book wasn't anything spectacular but it was perfectly fine。 And suffice it to say, it's difficult to read without hearing that damn 70s theme tune constantly playing in your head。 。。。more

A thoroughly enjoyable read。 Definitely began it thinking it was entirely a children's book, but the social commentary laid throughout has given me a desire to learn more about the author。 Despite Beauty's trails, he has a happy ending - as much as you can ask for from such a tale as this。 A thoroughly enjoyable read。 Definitely began it thinking it was entirely a children's book, but the social commentary laid throughout has given me a desire to learn more about the author。 Despite Beauty's trails, he has a happy ending - as much as you can ask for from such a tale as this。 。。。more

I’m actually not sure, but this could be a re-read for me。 I distinctly remember having a Ladybird copy of Black Beauty as a child, but I don’t remember actually reading it。 And not much about this book felt familiar。 When I started this book, my first thought was how there could be an entire book from the perspective of a horse? Well, Anna Sewell wrote that book。I honestly didn’t think that I would be able to get into this at first。 I mostly listened to the audiobook, and then read the last 40 I’m actually not sure, but this could be a re-read for me。 I distinctly remember having a Ladybird copy of Black Beauty as a child, but I don’t remember actually reading it。 And not much about this book felt familiar。 When I started this book, my first thought was how there could be an entire book from the perspective of a horse? Well, Anna Sewell wrote that book。I honestly didn’t think that I would be able to get into this at first。 I mostly listened to the audiobook, and then read the last 40 pages in the physical format。 But I persevered, and actually quite enjoyed it in the end。 The part of this book that shocked me was how educational I found it。 This book talks extensively about horse terminology and tack, which I feel like could have put me off as a child but I actually found it quite insightful now。We call them dumb animals, and so they are,The most important part of this story was the moral of be kind to animals, which I adored。 The more I think about the moral of this story, the more I absolutely love what it aimed to portray。 The focus on how the surroundings and treatment of the animals could change how they felt about life was incredibly well written and portrayed well。 I ended up feeling so many emotions for Black Beauty that I had full on body tingles at the end of the story!I think what let this book down for me was the pacing。 I just didn’t feel like there was enough of a story there to fill so many pages。 I found that throughout the book, I kept coming back to this point。 Even though this book does have many parts to it and the story definitely does develop, I did feel some of the story was reiterated a few times throughout。for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words。I imagine I would have enjoyed this as a child, but when I was old enough to be able to understand all of the terminology! I really liked the morals of this story, but it didn’t quite capture my attention as much as I was hoping。★★★★3。5 out of 5 stars-BethMay your shelves forever overflow with books! ☽ 。。。more

I really loved the ending。 Black Beauty lived a tough life, but in the end found happiness with her last owner。 I learned a lot about horses (which I really love) and the proper way to care for them。 Every time I see a black horse from now on, I will wonder what they are thinking and will always remember Black Beauty。

I liked this book, but sometimes I felt that it was boring, but it just tells about the problems of horses and animals, this is like a day-to-day life of a horse called Black Beauty。 I saw the Black Beauty movie that released at 2020, and after that I thought the book would be the same but not, it is completely different from the book, but yeah I didn't like it much。 I would not recommend this book to anyone 'cause it is boring。 So yeah this is my review。 Thank you。Happy Reading uwu I liked this book, but sometimes I felt that it was boring, but it just tells about the problems of horses and animals, this is like a day-to-day life of a horse called Black Beauty。 I saw the Black Beauty movie that released at 2020, and after that I thought the book would be the same but not, it is completely different from the book, but yeah I didn't like it much。 I would not recommend this book to anyone 'cause it is boring。 So yeah this is my review。 Thank you。Happy Reading uwu 。。。more
